What Type of Trader Will You Be?
These stock market books will help you understand that trading is different than investing. There are a few different types of traders, Day-Trader, Swing and Short-term Trader. You can trade stocks, options, and/or futures. Depending on what type of trader you are, you may hold a trade for a couple of minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months. No matter what you are trading or how long you plan to hold a trade, make sure to get some education on how to trade. You can learn a lot for online stock market trading for beginners at different broker sites, take some classes and attend seminars, or read some of the recommended stock market books on this site.

Note: If you plan to be a Day Trader, you will need to have a minimum of $25,000 in your broker account. A Day Trader is defined by someone who makes a buy and sell order in the same day, on the same security, more than 3 times in a 5 business-day period
.

What method of Research and Analysis will you use?
There are two primary methods that traders use, Fundamental Analysis and Charting. Fundamental analysis is studying the earnings and financial statements of companies and determing which ones will provide strong earnings and be positive trades. Charting is using patterns of stock market trading in the past to forecast what might happen in the future. The main method of charting is utilizing what's called "candlestick patterns" to measure market activity (what a stock opened at, what it closed at). These patterns can measure different increments of time increments, minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months.

Some key indicators to use on Charting or Technical analysis are:

  • EMA - Exponential Movin Average (usually set this value to 15)
  • SMA - Simple Movie Average (usually set this value to 50 and 20, if doing moderate to long-term trading add 100 and 200)

The values can average the value of the stock and its movement based on minutes, days, weeks, and/or months.

You can trade the market as it goes up known as long-selling, or as it goes down, short-selling. No matter which direction the market goes you can utilize a combination of fundamental and charting techniques to make money.
